Breaking the circle

Thursday, 17th June 2021

You may have seen one of the high street banks advertising a new scheme where they are helping the homeless by offering accounts to people without a fixed address. It’s a great idea and something we have been doing for years!

If you don’t have a bank account it can be hard to get a job, benefits or housing - but without an address you can’t get a bank account! This means many people find themselves in a viscous circle and are stuck without a home, job or a future.

This is why we work with the 700 Club, Mind, YMCA, First Stop, Through the Gates and other organisations to help. The agencies agree to act as a correspondence address for the homeless person, which means we can then provide them with a bank account.

A bank account gives a homeless person a safe place to keep and spend money from work or benefits as well as a way to spend or save in the future.

Our MoneySmart website (https://www.money-smart.uk) funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, also provides guidance and help on financial matters whether its moving into your own home, debt, benefits or any other money worries.

This means as well as helping homeless people to get a bank account we are supporting them every step of the way and, as with all our work, we operate in an ethical way – putting people at the heart of everything we do.
